Personalized Journalism vs. Privacy: The Boundaries of Television Intrusion into Private Life (A Case Study of NTV and Channel One Talk Shows, 2025–2026)

Masterov O.V.

Аннотация:

This article examines the conflict between the editorial practices of personalized journalism and citizens' rights to privacy in Russian talk shows aired between 2025 and 2026. Drawing on material from five programs—*Muzhskoe / Zhenskoe* and *Pust’ Govoryat* (Channel One), and *Sekret na Million*, *DNA*, and *Za Gran’yu* (NTV)—the study analyzes the mechanisms by which emotionally charged content is achieved at the cost of invading the participants' private spheres. The concept of "representational violence" is proposed to describe a mode of representation in which an individual is stripped of agency and treated merely as a resource for dramatic storytelling. Based on an analysis of case law (including the A. Serov case), updated personal data legislation (Federal Law No. 152-FZ, as amended in 2024–2025), and Helen Nissenbaum’s theory of contextual integrity, the article demonstrates a systemic contradiction between the editorial logic of talk shows and legal norms. An ethical principle of the "presumption of dignity on air" is formulated. The article is addressed to media law researchers, television producers, and media ethics specialists.
