Аннотация: One of the characteristic features of spontaneous spoken language is interruptions which lead to temporary breaks in the flow of speech. Interruptions, which are usually triggered either by pragmatic reasons or performance errors, result in speech fragments with different syntactic properties. In our analysis, we refer to interruptions as “syntactic accidents”. Based on the lexical properties, semantic links and syntagmatic relations between the adjacent disconnected fragments caused by syntactic accidents, we single out a variety of syntactic accidents. Often times, we observe an accumulation of syntactic accidents within the limits of one sentence.
The present article presents an analysis of multiple syntactic accidents that are observed in the speech of native speakers of English. The target group of the analysis is speakers of low socio-economic status. The article discusses the cases of accumulation of different types of syntactic accidents within the limits of one sentence and the possible reasons behind them.
