Аннотация: The article is devoted to the background and history of the development of distance education in the world. The main stages of the development of distance education are highlighted and their brief characteristics are given. The author defends the point of view that due to the forced transition to distance learning at all levels of educational systems in most countries of the world, 2020 can be considered the beginning of a new stage in the development of distance education.
