Architecture as a Social Construction: The example of Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg

The article reveals how the construction - the Peter and Paul Fortress - can be a part of the social world through its materiality and symbolism. Places interconnect material objects and human interaction. Today, the Peter and Paul Cathedral contains many meanings and performs many roles for the society.
It represents the birthplace of a big city (the capital of the Russian Empire from 1712 to 1918), it is a symbol of brotherhood, a symbol of the city's keeper (an angel with a cross on a spire), a majestic place where emperors are buried, and a unique monument of Italian architect Dominico Trezzini.
