Аннотация: The article deals with issue of Russian classical literature in the interpretation of British playwright Howard Barker. The stages of the development of the term “classical literature” are identified. The main differences between the original version of Uncle Vanya by Chekhov and the alternative version by Howard Barker are determined. It is concluded that the illustration of the same character by different writers depends on both time and mentality factors.
